Christian. Marton. Taken.
Jan. 2nd, 2006 11:05 amWith the meeting finally over, Christian kissed Caeline goodbye and headed back down the hall toward the family area and offices. After Johnny's mental interruption he'd switched off and was now surprised to find a level of activity unprecedented in his memory going on in the halls of Palace-Proper.
Security guards of various rank were literally belting up and down the corridors, pulling up staff members and checking their identification; it was pretty obvious there'd been a breach of some kind. Weird, yeah, and the anxiety levels were strong enough to be leaking through even his tough shields.
Somewhere along the way he'd picked up Lawrence and the man had that stony-faced look that presaged trouble. His bodyguard's appearing on the top floor was enough to have Christian beginning to worry about what the hell was going on, never mind the amount of official activity in what was essentially his home and usually off-limits to most of these folk. He quickened his pace, Lawrence keeping step beside him and sped up around the last turn, heading for his father's office at a rapid clip.
"So Beta Three and Four are secure? Good. What about Five? He's in the building? Right." Keifer glanced up from where he'd seemingly appropriated Marcus' desk as Christian entered the outer office and then spoke back into his unit. "Alpha Two's just arrived and that's all accounted for. You call me when yours are back in and I'll lock-down." He hung up.
Fuck? What was going on? Christian knew the codes. Keifer had just been talking about Orlando and Craig and Five was Harry . . . Had somebody tried something? Where was Anna?
"Six?" he demanded of Keifer, his feet not even slowing as he headed for his father's open office door.
"Secure." Keifer's response was short and to the point. Christian nodded an acknowledgement and barreled into Marton's office without ceremony, slamming the door shut behind him. "Dad?"
Marton looked both angry and devastated. Whatever it was, it was something bad and Christian felt his throat tighten. Marton waved him to a seat, clearing his throat as he came around to the front of his desk. His father sat directly in front of his chair and, by now, Christian's heart was thumping in his chest and the desire to switch back 'on' and just rip the information out of the atmosphere was near-overwhelming him. But the thought was frightening too, and so he waited for his father to tell him, needing that small comfort.
But it didn't help. Even as Marton opened his mouth to speak, the sense of dread coalesced into a horrible, terrible certainty as Christian's mind put the evidence together.
" . . . taken Johnny." Marton was saying but his voice was like an echo battling to be heard against the violent wind that was Christian's mind, silently screaming.
